Dealing with anxiety as a Christian mom

You can’t enjoy family life if you’re stuck in a place of anxiety and worry. It just isn’t possible! Anxiety sucks the joy from everything we try to do.

So let’s deal with it.

We’ve looked recently at practical action steps that we can take to deal with anxiety as Christians. But God promises so much more than just action steps.

He promises you his peace, his presence, and his power to overcome these hard emotions.

Pause with me for a moment today to dive into this key piece of dealing with anxiety as Christians. Let’s look at what God promises and how He shows up in your hardest emotions.

What do you really need when you're dealing with anxiety?

We live in a world that wants a quick fix. Of course that’s what you want! You want to click a button on this screen and have the anxiety just go away. That’s what we all want.

This quick fix is available… but it probably doesn’t look like you’re expecting.

Anxiety can be really overwhelming. And controlling this hard emotion is a key part of being able to get back to enjoying family life! You can’t be mentally and emotionally present with your family if you’re stuck in a place of worry and anxiety.

So you need a solution.

And God promises to give you exactly what you need.

What God does NOT promise in your anxiety

The bad news is: God does not promise to change the thing that is making you anxious. He might not ever take away the problem or solve things in the way you hope.

But let’s remember: He’s God.

If you pray for him to change something in your life that is triggering anxiety, and He does not do that, it’s because He has a better plan.

“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)

God always does the right thing, and sometimes that does not line up with what we think is the right thing.

So if you are asking God to change something in your life, and you aren’t seeing him do that, praise him anyway. He is worthy of ALL praise, even when we are confused or don’t understand what He is doing.

What God DOES promise as you are dealing with anxiety

While God does not promise to change the problem or situation that is triggering your anxiety, He does promise to change your anxiety.

How?

He promises to give you peace.

Not just any peace! An ultimate, supernatural, all-encompassing peace. A peace that protects your heart AND your mind. The peace of God himself.

In Philippians chapter 4, there is a very clear call to action for Christians who are dealing with anxiety. That comes in verse 6: “Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

And then, in the very next verse, God makes an incredible promise.

“And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)

This is what God promises. When you are dealing with anxiety as a Christian, you have the security that God will provide exactly what you truly need: peace.

A peace beyond understanding

One of the most incredible things about God’s promise of peace is that it will not even make sense to us.

In a worldly, logical way, the peace that God gives will be beyond understanding. From the worldly perspective, your anxiety makes sense! Of course there are plenty of things that can worry us.

But because you know God, you do not need to be worried by the things of the world.

Even very legitimate, scary things that can make us feel anxious are small when compared to our God.

As you become a woman of prayer, you will experience God being more and more present in your life. Of course, He has not changed – but you change! Prayer changes us.

Building intimacy with God  means that when the world thinks you should be feeling anxious, you can instead experience a supernatural peace.

His peace will guard your heart and mind

Anxiety has a big impact on both your heart and your mind. When we looked together at 10 reasons why Christian moms struggle with out of control emotions, the heart and head both showed up in a big way!

When you’re feeling anxious, it automatically involves your heart. That’s exactly what we’re talking about when we talk about feelings!

Anxiety means that you’re feeling unsettled, nervous, or constantly worried. Your heart is bothered. And God promises to protect your heart in Christ Jesus.

But anxiety also impacts your mind. It is common to struggle with racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, and negative thinking. And similarly, God promises to protect your mind in Christ Jesus.

What a wonderful promise!

God will give you exactly what you need when you’re dealing with anxiety as a Christian. A supernatural peace that guards your heart and mind.

Will it ever be easy to deal with anxiety?

No. Dealing with anxiety as a Christian mom will never be easy.

God knows that you live in a broken world. In John 16:33, Jesus promises: “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”

The trouble is real, and it will come. But Jesus has overcome the world. And the same power that raised Jesus from the dead now lives inside you, as a followed of Christ! So when God promises in Philippians 4:7 to “guard your hearts and minds in Christ Jesus,” that is not a silly Sunday-School promise.

That is a big, strong, powerful, life-changing promise.

Anxiety might always be a part of your life. But God is bigger than your anxiety.

As you take the steps to make God bigger than your problems, your anxiety will get more and more manageable. You’ll be able to focus on your family life you want to and build healthy relationships.

Anxiety might not be easy, but it does not have to define your life. Only God defines who you are. He never makes mistakes. He never messes up. And He never falls short in fulfilling every one of his promises.

Including his promise to give you a PEACE that passes all understanding.
