When we are looking for wisdom, help, patience, joy, and basically anything else good in life… our best bet is to start in the Bible.
After all, God’s Word is living and active. It is powerful and full of wisdom.
And God has a lot to say about our relationships!

These 5 Bible verses for family relationships are ones that I turn to again and again as a Christian family counselor. They are so helpful and encouraging!
Life is full of ups and downs. Emotions are hard to manage, communication can break down, and family life can be tough.
Let’s look at these Scriptures together to find wisdom and help from the Lord.

(1) Taming The Tongue (James 3:8)
“But no human being can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.” James 3:8 (NIV)
In many places, the Bible reminds us that our hearts are deceitful, full of evil, and darkened by sin and worldliness. If we speak from this heart, we will certainly harm our family relationships!.
But when we give our lives to Christ, He changes our hearts. He puts the Holy Spirit in us (Galatians 4) and makes us a new creation (2 Corinthians 5).
And this new heart changes how we use our tongues.
Instead of bitterness and anger, we can share encouragement and hope. When we are tempted to complain about someone, we can instead tell them something we love about them.
No human can tame the tongue. But the Holy Spirit will change YOU.
As you grow in Christ, He will change your heart – and change your tongue. He will help your words to be more patient, loving, kind, and gentle. He will give you words of encouragement and hope.

(2) Humility, Gentleness, And Patience (Ephesians 4:2)
“Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love.” Ephesians 4:2 (NIV)
“Completely” is a big word – but if we want healthy, happy, and holy family relationships, this is what we need to strive for!
Of course, only Jesus is completely humble, gentle and patient. But our Lord has given us the Holy Spirit, and as we grow spiritually we show more and more humility, gentleness, and patience in our family relationships.
Jesus was completely humble. And as we follow him, He can make us humble. We can serve and love our families better in this humility.
As we grow in humility, we also grow in gentleness. It is hard to be gentle when relationships are tough – but it is a fruit of the Spirit that is growing in us.
And with greater humility and deeper gentleness, our hearts become more and more patient. We can wait. We can tolerate hardships. We can trust God in it all.
Humility deepens our family intimacy. Gentleness draws us closer to one another. Patience keeps us moving forward, even on the hard days, covering our struggle with love.

(3) The Peace of Christ (Colossians 3:15)
“Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful.” Colossians 3:15 (NIV)
I’ll be honest – you’ll do even better reading through all of Colossians 3. It’s my favorite chapter in all of Scripture, and it is filled with Bible verses about family relationships!
And this one is the centerpiece.
Think of your home. Your living room, kitchen, den… the bedrooms, the laundry room. Every home is different, but every home has an atmosphere.
And that atmosphere is mostly led by mom. When we allow ourselves to be grumpy and grouchy, our family relationships are tense and unpleasant.
But when we let the peace of Christ rule in our hearts, everything changes. Our family finds peace. We are all more thankful. The atmosphere of our homes will reflect the peace of Christ in our hearts.
(4) Love With Actions (1 John 3:18)
“Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth.” 1 John 3:18 (NIV)
We all enjoy the “feeling” of love. But our family relationships are best when we follow the wisdom of what God says love really is.
Love is sacrifice. It is acting in a way that blesses, helps, and serves others.
Can you imagine if that was the description of how your family treated each other??
So, start with yourself. Yes, the words matter! But your actions show the true depth of your love. Your actions go a long way toward strengthening your family bond, connecting with each other, and building trust and intimacy.
How can you “lay down your life” for your husband and children – people you probably would take a bullet for if you had to! How can you SHOW them your love with actions?

(5) Focus On Good Things (Philippians 4:8)
“Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.” Philippians 4:8 (NIV)
Yes, this is a Bible verse about your thoughts. But your thoughts will directly shape the quality of your family relationships.
If you are thinking about these good, beautiful, godly things, that will lead to godly words, beautiful interactions, and good, healthy relationships.
When your mind is filled with these true, noble, pure, lovely things, you will be far more likely to speak kindly to people, share your gratitude, and give encouragement when you speak.
Your attitude will also be more godly – you’ll be happier, more at peace, and noticing positive things all around you.
When you’re struggling with what to think about (or talk about), turn back to the Bible. Turn back to God. He is the ultimate true, lovely, excellent One!
