Using the Bible to teach your kids the Christmas story

Over the past few years, I’ve loved using the Christmas season to look closely at Scripture passages that help me know Jesus better.

And now that my kids are 3 and 6 years old, they’re really starting to memorize Scripture and know Bible stories better and better.

Which means I want them to know THESE Scriptures! At Christmas, I want them to zoom in with me on the Bible verses that most closely point to Jesus’ identity and mission.

Yes, I have a 25-day Christmas Devotional (mom version, dad version, kid version… and a family bundle of all 3!) to dive deeply into these Scriptures with reflection, prayer, and family conversation.

(1) Isaiah 9:2-7

This is a perfect Scripture to start with, because it is a clear prophecy of Jesus’ birth. “For to us a child is born, to us a son is given…” These are famous verses for a reason!

As you prepare your family to celebrate Jesus’ birth, start with this incredible prophecy.

(2) Isaiah 11:1-10

Another great prophecy from the Old Testament, which all points to Jesus and God’s story of salvation.

This passage of Scripture shows how Jesus will rule – with justice and righteousness! It paints a picture of what life will be like thanks to the birth of Jesus.

(3) Luke 1:26-38

After teaching your kids some famous and popular Christmas Scriptures in the Old Testament, jump forward to the New Testament.

Here in the Gospel of Luke, we see the angel Gabriel appearing to Mary, to tell her she is going to have a baby. Jesus is coming! Don’t skip over this passage; it makes Jesus’ birth all the more powerful and amazing.

One of the amazing truths about Christmas is that Jesus is going to come back!

This Bible passage points to our time now, as we wait for Jesus’ return. “The night is nearly over; the day is almost here. So let us put aside the deeds of darkness and put on the armor of light.” (verse 12)

We see a picture of waiting well, which we want to teach our kids to do too.

(7) Revelation 22

This is probably not a part of the Bible that you think of as a popular Christmas Scripture… but here is where Jesus’ birth ultimately leads.

He is coming again and we will live with God forever in the new heaven and earth!
