5 Practical Action Steps For When You’re Feeling Discouraged

When you’re feeling discouraged, you need the perfect Bible verse. Turn to Psalm 62 to find encouragement and peace in God.

Feeling discouraged in motherhood?

None of us think that You aren’t here just to survive motherhood.

You’re here to enjoy it! To enjoy all of family life. To build deep, wonderful family relationships that you can enjoy… even when you’re struggling with big emotions and hard seasons.

Yes, family life is messy. It’s chaotic. We all get frustrated, we get overwhelmed, relationships can discourage us and life can be really hard.

And Psalm 62 has exactly the wisdom we need for THOSE parts of Christian family life.

So join me today, friend, to take a look at the 5 “R’s” that we find here in Psalm 62. When things are rough, these 5 action steps are straight from God to encourage your heart and keep you on the right path.

My favorite Bible verse for when I'm feeling discouraged

When I’m wrestling through a big emotion, I know that it’s helpful to read the Bible. But I often get stuck.

Where should I turn? What should I read? There are 150 psalms… which is the go-to place for THIS emotion?

I’ve made little notes in my Bible over the years to help guide me to exactly the right place at the right time.

And when I’m feeling discouraged, the Bible verse note here in Psalm 62 is a big star and circle, so I can go straight there when I need encouragement –

Truly my soul finds rest in God; my salvation comes from him. Truly he is my rock and my salvation; he is my fortress, I will never be shaken. (Psalm 62:1-2)

Do you feel “shaken” when life is discouraging? Are you looking for the “rest” that only God provides? I’m raising my hand over here! And I love the 5 action steps that Psalm 62 points to next.

5 action steps from Psalm 62

When you are feeling discouraged and you open your Bible, that is an AMAZING start. You will find hope, peace, and encouragement that only God can give!

But I hope that you won’t stop there.

Because here in Psalm 62, we find 5 action steps that will help you start living out the encouragement God wants for you.

1. Remind yourself (v. 1-2)

When you are feeling discouraged, the best Bible verses will REMIND you of truth. Who is God? What is most important in your life? Where can you stand firm when things feel like they are falling apart?

God is your rock. Your foundation. He is your salvation. While you might feel shaken, He is holding you the whole way through it.

2. Recognize hardships (v. 3-4)

I’m never more annoyed than when someone tries to tell me I shouldn’t be worried / discouraged / upset about something. There are many things in life that are genuinely HARD! Things that are painful and discouraging.

So I love that this psalm is realistic about life’s hardships. When you feel discouraged, it’s usually because something is genuinely hard, frustrating, or upsetting. God’s strength and goodness does not mean that everything in life will be roses and ice cream. And RECOGNIZING hardship will help you move past it.

3. Remind yourself (v. 5-8)

When you recognize and focus on the real hardships of life, this next step is so helpful. REMIND yourself of truth – again! Don’t sit in the hard stuff. Refocus back onto God – who He is and what He has done.

In fact this time, the psalmist adds a verse and spends a little extra time reminding himself about God’s goodness and faithfulness. I know that when I think about the hardships of life, I need a little extra reminder of Truth.

4. Rest in God alone (v. 9-10)

The next action step that is here in Psalm 62 sounds much easier than it really is. Rest. As you look around at all the other things in life that you may be tempted to lean on, you can see that they are not worthwhile. They will fall out from under you.

So as you remind yourself of who God is, make a choice to REST in Him alone. He is your hope and peace when you are feeling discouraged!

5. Look forward to the reward from God (v. 11-12)

If you’re really walking through these 5 steps, you might think that a decision to focus on, rest in, and stand firm on God is the end. And hopefully you really are feeling more encouraged at this point.

But to really let that encouragement and hope settle in your heart, take this final step.

Look forward. There is a REWARD coming for those who follow Jesus! God has all power, and He has promised a reward to those who belong to him. When you are feeling discouraged about hard things in this life, look forward to the reward that is coming.
